'In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberias...the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.'  St Luke 3.1-2

Of all the religions of the world, Christianity is the most rooted in history.  Luke, the writer of the 3rd gospel in our New Testament, sees the whole sweep of history as God's plan of salvation.  The word of God that came to John the Baptizer comes also to us in the same way--in a specific historical context.  Whether that be a world context or a personal context, God does not sit passively in heaven with a  remote control, watching detached as history unfolds.  No, God comes to each of us in our own contexts with his word of power, grace, and salvation.  Immanuel--God with us.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10:
  • Baptism of Paige Elizabeth Voeltsch
  • Dedication of new stained glass window in lobby
  • Manyulova family will be our guests and sing for us
MIDWEEK ADVENT VESPERSWednesday, December 6, we begin our well-loved Soup and Bread suppers at 6pm, followed by Holden Evening Prayer for our Vespers worship at 7pm.  Please come for either or both!  These are wonderful opportunities to connect with what's important during the weeks before Christmas:  God and people.

SOX, SOX, WE NEED NEW SOX!!  Please remember to bring a pair (or two) of new sox to church this week.  The big basket is out to collect these sox for homeless and needy people.  Bring men's, women's, or children's sox.  Let's fill it up!

DAYS OF JOY:  Our 2nd annual community outreach arrives this week, on Friday and Saturday evenings, Dec. 8 and 9.  From 5 - 9pm each evening, we extend a special invitation to you and to our neighborhood / community to join us for a soup supper, activities, and music.  Friday evening the Salvation Army Band plays at 7pm, and at the same time on Saturday we ar thrilled to have the Portland Holy Cross Vietnamese Lutheran Church choir here.  Come and enjoy!

IN YOUR PRAYERS please continue to remember those in our congregation who have lost loved ones recently:  Kris Wall, her father and sister; Debi Williams, her father; Ellen Tulee, her sister.

'Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of our God.'
